Asana at 4.9 vs Jira at 9.5: Same Job, Different Engineering

2026-10-31

Two tool integrations for adjacent products, evaluated on the same rubric, land more than four points apart. The comparison is a clean look at what engineering means in a skill.

Workflow9.51.5
Content9.56.5
Engineering9.05.5
Security10.09.5
Total9.54.9

Both files know their product. The gap is in what they do with that knowledge.

What Asana does

The Asana file describes operations: create a task, update a project, move work between sections. It is useful as a reference. It does not say which operation to run first for a given request, how to discover which workspace or project is in scope, what to do when a write fails, or when to stop and ask.

That is why workflow scores 1.5. The agent is left to invent the procedure.

What Jira does

The Jira file treats the same domain as a system. It starts with capability discovery, routes between a CLI and an MCP connector, reads only the reference it needs, and gates mutations behind an approval step. The procedure is explicit enough that an agent can follow it without improvising.

The security score is also higher (10 versus 9.5), but that is not because the Asana file is unsafe. It is because the Jira file makes the approval gate part of the workflow rather than an implicit expectation.

The same pattern repeats

ClickUp Automation scores 5.5 with a workflow score of 1.5. Calendar Automation scores 4.9 with a workflow score of 2.0. Sheets Automation scores 5.4 with a workflow score of 2.5.

These are not bad products or useless files. They are reference documents wearing a skill's clothing. The fix is the same in each case: add the sequence, the discovery step, the verification step, and the stop condition.

The takeaway

If you are writing a tool skill, the product knowledge is the easy part. The score is decided by whether you turn that knowledge into a procedure. Jira is the model in this batch; Asana, ClickUp, and Calendar show what the same domain looks like when the procedure is left implicit.
